What is an AIIMS Institute?

In India, the healthcare education sector is incomplete without the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). AIIMS is an autonomous statutory body that works as an institution of national importance in the field of healthcare. Currently, India has 20 fully operational AIIMS institutes under the regulation of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. All 20 AIIMS Institutes in India have a total of 2,257 MBBS seats. AIIMS Delhi has the highest number of MBBS seats, around 132.

AIIMS is considered the backbone of the Indian healthcare system by offering high-quality medical education (especially MBBS), advanced-level research exposure, affordable medical facilities, and on-site practice under the guidance of highly experienced faculty. Very soon, the healthcare ministry will open 5-6 AIIMS institutes across India (Source: The Hindu). AIIMS Delhi is the first and oldest AIIMS institute, which was established in 1956, while AIIMS Bhopal (2012) and AIIMS Bhubaneswar (2012) were established after this.

AIIMS Entrance Exam for MBBS

Till 2019, the AIIMS institute had its own entrance exam and a separate admission process for MBBS. Since 2020, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has changed its policy and conducts the NEET exam to get admission to all MBBS colleges, including AIIMS for MBBS, across India. NEET is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam.

Every year, the NTA conducts the NEET exam in May, where admission to the AIIMS depends on NEET exam scores and the centralised NEET counselling process. The cutoff marks to get admission in AIIMS institutes are much higher in comparison with other MBBS institutes. More than 20 lakh students appear in the NEET exam every year, while the exam primarily tests students from 11th- and 12th-level Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects based on the NCERT syllabus. Check the updated NEET syllabus to prepare, with a target score to get admission to the AIIMS institute. Also, check the AIIMS Doctor Salary to know about the salary provided by the different AIIMS institutes to Doctors at different levels.

Admission Process in AIIMS for MBBS

The admission process to pursue MBBS from AIIMS is a multi-staged process. If any NEET aspirant wants to get admission in the MBBS course from the AIIMS institute, then he/she should successfully participate in the following step-by-step process:

1. Registering and Clearing NEET Exam 2027

The first step a student can take to get admission to MBBS in the AIIMS institute is to register for the NEET exam and clear it with the required cutoff marks. The registration process for the NEET 2027 exam is expected to start in February 2027. It is expected that NEET 2027 will be conducted by the NTA on 2 May 2027 (Sunday).

The cutoff marks of AIIMS institutes are generally higher due to high-level competition and limited availability of MBBS seats. NEET division experts at Matrix Academy suggest that its students focus on targeting more than 650+ marks out of 720 to get admission to an AIIMS institute, while top AIIMS institutes like AIIMS Delhi might require 700+ marks. The NEET 2027 exam preparation should be based on mastering NCERT concepts and practising extensively. Matrix Academy advises focusing on the top ranks (under AIR 1000) for top AIIMS institutes like AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Bhopal, and AIIMS Rishikesh.

Note: Know about crucial NEET 2027 exam day guidelines to avoid any mistakes for the NEET exam, so you can secure your dream of getting admission to the desired AIIMS institute.

2. MCC Counselling Process Registration

The second stage to get admission to an AIIMS institute for MBBS after the result announcement is successfully registering for the NEET counselling process conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). The suggested crucial tips for the AIIMS counselling process are as follows-

  • All AIIMS MBBS seats are filled through MCC’s central counselling process, which also administers the 15% All India Quota for state medical colleges. You don’t need to opt into AIQ for AIIMS seats separately.
  • When selecting MBBS colleges during the choice-filling stage, choose the desired AIIMS institutes as your primary choice. There is no limitation on choosing the maximum number of colleges during the counselling process. Your choice should be based on ranking.
  • The overall chance of getting an MBBS seat in the AIIMS institute depends on your NEET score, seat availability, and college choice filled during counselling.

3. MBBS Seat Allotment

In this stage, the MCC will announce seat allotment results by considering factors like NEET rank, college preferences, and seat availability. If you get an MBBS seat allotted by MCC, then you have to decide whether to accept or participate in further rounds for better options.

4. Final Reporting & Fee Submission

This is the final stage to get admission to the AIIMS institute, where a student will submit the admission fee and all the documents required for the verification process at the allotted institute.

AIIMS Eligibility Criteria for MBBS

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has very strict guidelines regarding NEET eligibility criteria for admission to AIIMS institutes. We suggest that every NEET aspirant should consider the following eligibility criteria before applying for admission to AIIMS institutes.

1. Entrance Exam Criteria: A student must clear the NEET 2027 exam with a minimum cutoff mark. Check the expected NEET cut-off marks to get more clarity about the admission criteria of MBBS institutes.

2. Age Criteria: According to the NTA, there is no restriction on the upper age limit, but the minimum age of a candidate to apply for admission to the AIIMS should be at least 17 years old as of 31st December of the admission year. For example, if you are applying for admission through the NEET 2027 exam, then your age should be at least 17 years as of 31st December 2027.

3. Allowed Attempts: The NTA does not restrict the maximum number of attempts to get admission to the AIIMS.

4. Educational Criteria with Minimum Marks: A student should have passed or be appearing in 12th class with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English from a recognised board. Do not worry, if you have math in 12th, you have to take Biology as an additional subject. Category-wise minimum marks required in the 12th class to get admission in the AIIMS institute are:

  • General: 60%
  • OBC/SC/ST: 50%
  • PwD: 45%

5. Nationality: Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs, and foreign nationals are eligible. However, some admission rules may be slightly different for foreign category candidates.

So, students who want admission to the AIIMS institute for MBBS should fulfil the above-mentioned eligibility criteria for the upcoming NEET 2027 exam. Check the NEET Admit card and NEET City Intimation Slip release dates to not miss any important deadline from the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Expected Cutoff to get Admission in AIIMS Institutes

The average cutoff marks of the AIIMS institute are higher in comparison with other institutes. The exact cutoff marks depend on factors like the number of appearing students, seat availability, competition level, and exam difficulty level.

  • Out of 720 marks, Matrix Academy predicted that the safe score for the top AIIMS institutes, like AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Bhopal, might be between 700 and 720 marks for the General category.
  • Other AIIMS institute MBBS seats might be secured with a score of 650–680 through the NEET 2027 exam.

How to Get Admissions in the AIIMS Institute for MBBS? Matrix Academy Suggested Tips

Matrix Academy is a leading coaching institute in Sikar that has maintained years of consistency in supporting NEET students preparing to get admission to AIIMS institutes. In the batch of 2024-25, 71 students were enrolled in AIIMS for the MBBS course. Apart from highly personalised preparation we provide in our classroom courses for AIIMS, we provide the following additional tips to students, which are proven guides to secure medical seats in AIIMS colleges across India:

1. Target to Score 700+ Marks with Mock Test Practice

Matrix Academy knows that if a student wants to get admission to the AIIMS institute, then preparation is strictly done to score 700+ marks in the NEET exam. And for this, constant practice is very crucial because every single mark is important while targeting the AIIMS institute. This is where attempting the NEET mock tests becomes very crucial.

At Matrix, we don’t focus on just completing the syllabus, but we also prepare to become successful in it. Matrix promotes a culture where students prepare for the NEET exam with a high-scoring strategy, driven by concept mastery, error analysis, and targeted revision.

Matrix Physics faculty member Madan Haritwal Sir believes that mock tests are a crucial part of comprehensive NEET exam preparation. Understanding strategies to increase marks in mock tests will not only improve performance in mock tests but will also directly impact the main examination. It is followed that after each test, expert faculty provide feedback to individual students on each mistake to eliminate the scope for future mistakes. Madan Haritwal suggests that mock test marks will be improved only gradually, and a structured plan to improve mock test marks is mentioned below-

Current Mock ScoreNext TargetMatrix Expert Suggestion
Below 450Reach 550 firstBuild NCERT concepts and remove weak chapters.
450- 550Target 620+Focus on accuracy and daily revision.
550- 650Target 680+Increase mock test frequency and error analysis.
650- 690Target 700+Work only on silly mistakes, speed, and consistency.
700+Maintain scoreSimulate actual NEET conditions every week.

2. Prioritizing NEET Exam High-Weightage Chapters

If you are targeting the AIIMS institute, you should excel in every chapter/topic of the NEET exam because you have to focus on scoring 700+ marks. But to begin with, you can prioritize high-weightage chapters of the NEET exam in all 3 subjects, such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It ultimately increases your performance in Mock tests by boosting your confidence and also helps in maintaining accuracy, so you can score maximum marks with conceptual clarity.

Experts suggest that before your teacher starts a particular topic in class, you can try to solve PYQs. This way, you will understand and highlight important topics before reading the whole chapter. This also helps in converting passive reading into active learning to develop conceptual clarity.

Tip to Crack AIIMS Institute from Nikita, AIR 281 in the NEET UG 2023 exam: Nikita secured admission to her dream college, AIIMS Jodhpur. Nikita has several times appreciated the Matrix NEET division Physics faculty, Madan Haritwal Sir’s approach to studying with a single source throughout the preparation journey without engaging with multiple sources. Nikita said that Madan Sir always told her to study topics and chapters multiple times to strengthen them instead of studying them from multiple resources because it ultimately confuses you.

3. Practice with NCERT + Matrix Academy’s Comprehensive Study Materials

An effective and structured NEET exam preparation should be done on an advanced level, combining the NCERT and highly researched study materials, such as Matrix 3-tier research-based modules, Daily Practice Papers (DPPs), revision test series, daily test series, and practice papers. 80-90% of the NEET exam syllabus is from NCERT books, which is why we say that NCERT is enough for NEET, while the remaining advanced level 10-15% can be covered with these study materials. Matrix Academy’s course materials are specifically designed to create a strong foundation for solving advanced-level topics/questions.

Matrix Academy 2024-25 batch student Rohit Yadav scored AIR 1092 and was selected for AIIMS Bhopal. They shared their experience in a detailed conversation with us. Initially, their marks were not good in the mock tests due to a medical issue and a lack of consistency in studies. Then, the Matrix NEET Chemistry faculty and Co-founder Birbal Maan Sir offered personal assistance to him by discussing the major reasons behind the low marks. Maan Sir advised him to analyse the mistakes of each test and asked him to send them via WhatsApp personally. After this, Maan Sir provided him with a solution through voice notes that included the approach to avoid these mistakes. This positive approach from Birbal Maan Sir ultimately boosted his confidence, and his marks improved slowly.

4. Study with Structured Revision

Revision is the key to remembering complex topics, where you can practice with weekly and monthly revision schedules to target AIIMS institutes with higher marks. At Matrix, our NEET aspirants regularly practice with quick, short revision notes, a mistake register, chapter-wise formula sheets, and revising the NCERT line by line. This ultimately improves accuracy in the final exam to score high marks for the AIIMS institute.

Our NEET Chemistry faculty, Birbal Maan Sir, identifies that every year the NEET exam has a good number of assertion, conceptual clarity, and statement-based questions with high weightage. So, they recommend regularly practising these types of questions to improve critical thinking and NEET 2027 exam scores by targeting AIIMS institutes. Matrix Academy prepared a specific formula-based approach to crack AIIMS institutes, which is mentioned below-

5. Matrix Academy’s Weekly Routine to Get Admission to AIIMS

Matrix NEET division believes that if you are targeting the AIIMS institute for MBBS, then your preparation should be based only on scoring marks of more than 700+. For this, you have to cover all your weak areas by regularly practising them because each mark is important while targeting the AIIMS institute. You can regularly practice by smartly attempting the NEET mock tests, which improves conceptual clarity over rote learning under real NEET exam conditions.

Matrix Academy NEET faculty designed a specific weekly study plan to target the AIIMS institute, so students can get admission as per their choice.

DayStudy Plan
Monday- FridayClassroom study, DPP practice, NCERT revision
SaturdayChapter test with error analysis
Sunday1. Attempting a full syllabus mock test and discussions with mentors for feedback.
2. Revision of weak topics

6. Minimization of the Mistakes

Matrix Academy student, Saurabh Budania, AIR 1077, selected to AIIMS Rishikesh, suggested that every student avoid the following 3 mistakes to increase their overall chance of selection to an AIIMS medical college.

  • Comparing Your Marks with Other Students
    • Saurabh clearly mentioned that comparing the current mock score with your previous test marks or classmate marks will create a negative impact on your preparation.
    • Instead of this, Saurabh set a personal target to improve by 10–20 marks every few tests. Saurabh improved his marks by focusing on accuracy and question-solving speed.
    • Saurabh only compares mock test scores with previous test marks by avoiding discussing scores immediately after every mock test.
  • Not Analysing Mock Tests Properly
    • Saurabh spends at least 2-3 hours analysing every mock test after completing full-length mock tests.
    • The mistakes of mock tests should be registered in the error notebook to re-study them before attempting the next mock test.
    • According to Saurabh, it is important to categorise mistakes into concept errors, calculation mistakes, silly mistakes, and time-management issues.
  • Ignoring Mentors and Losing Consistency After Low Scores
    • Students should trust their mentor’s study plan instead of changing their strategy after every low score.
    • Always consider low mock test scores as positive feedback, not as a final result for NEET performance.
    • Students should maintain a fixed daily study schedule to get into a top AIIMS institute.
    • Discuss your weak areas with teachers or mentors and follow their guidance.
