How to Fill Choices in JoSAA Counselling 2026?

JoSAA counselling 2026 registration began on June 2, 2026, at 17:00 IST. The process of registration is ongoing at josaa.nic.in. The JEE Advanced 2026 result was released on June 1, 2026 (10:00 IST), and JoSAA counselling registration started the next day after the results were released. Knowing how to fill in choices in JoSAA counselling 2026 is the most crucial step after the results. Students who qualified for the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams are eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling. The difference between getting a seat at IIT Bombay CSE and a seat at a tier-3 GFTI can be more than just about a rank. It is also about making the right choices.

This guide, prepared by Matrix JEE experts, covers how to fill out choices in JoSAA counselling 2026 and the entire process in detail. Students can check out the important documents required, the step-by-step registration process, the fee payment procedure, and a strategic approach to building their preference list.

JoSAA Counselling 2026 Form Filling Process

The JoSAA counselling process is conducted entirely online from registration to final reporting. There will be a total of 5 rounds. Before the official rounds start, 2 mock rounds will be conducted to give candidates a fair idea of what colleges they might expect based on their JEE Main score and JEE Advanced 2026 rank.

The following are all the steps that students need to know and need to complete in the JoSAA counselling 2026 form:

  • Register for the JoSAA counselling 2026 process.
  • Complete the choice-filling process.
  • Submit the required documents.
  • Pay the total fees and review the form before submitting.
  • Mock seat allotment, which will happen in 2 rounds.
  • Based on the mock seat allotment, students can review their choices and lock the final college and branch choices in priority order.
  • The seat allotment result will be given after every round in all of the 5 counselling rounds of JoSAA.
  • With whatever college or seat allotted to you are fine with, print the allotment letter.
  • The next step is to choose if you want to freeze/float/slide the allotted seat.
  • Next, document verification in the college or seat you have accepted is done by attending the institute physically.
  • Lastly, clear the seat acceptance fees to lock in the choice before the deadline.

This was an overview of the entire process of registering, form-filling and the process of JoSAA counselling. We will discuss each step in detail below by understanding how to fill in the choices in the JoSAA counselling strategically, based on expert tips. Check the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff to find which college options are available based on your rank.

Documents Required for JoSAA 2026

The students who have qualified for the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams can register for the JoSAA counselling. But before starting the registration, Matrix JEE experts advise students to keep all the required documents ready and updated. After each round of seat allotment, there is typically only a 24 to 48-hour window to upload the documents and pay the seat acceptance fee. The table below has a list of all the documents to keep ready:

DocumentNotes
JEE Main 2026 Admit CardRequired for all candidates
JEE Main 2026 Rank Card / Score CardRequired for all candidates
JEE Advanced 2026 Admit Card + Rank CardOnly for IIT aspirants
Class 10 Mark Sheet & CertificateProof of date of birth
Class 12 Mark Sheet & Passing CertificateBoth required
Category Certificate (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS)Must be issued after April 1, 2026, and older certificates will be rejected.
PwD CertificateIf applicable, must be from a competent medical authority.
Passport-size PhotographsMultiple copies, white background
Valid Photo IDAadhaar card, passport, or driving licence

NOTE: A common mistake students make that can cost them their seat, even if it is an IIT seat, is not updating their category certificate. The category certificate must be updated on or after April 1, 2026; an earlier date or a date before this will lead to disqualification in JoSAA counselling and may result in the candidate losing their seat.

JoSAA Counselling 2026 Registration

The JoSAA counselling 2026 registration window is open now. Students are advised to register and start filling in their choices early, as the window is limited. Here is how to register to fill the JoSAA counselling choices:

  1. Visit josaa.nic.in and click on “New Candidate Registration”.
  2. If you are applying only with your JEE Main 2026 score, enter the JEE Main 2026 application number and password.
  3. If you are applying using your JEE Advanced score for IITs, register using your JEE Advanced 2026 application number and password.
  4. Enter and verify all personal details and then click on ‘confirm registration’. After successful registration, students will be guided to the choice-filling section. There is no registration fee at this stage. Fee payment is only required after a seat is allotted.

Research Institutes and Programmes Before Filling

The JoSAA has a preference-based sequential algorithm, which is why it is very important to fill the choices carefully. For example, you have a good rank in JEE Advanced, where you can easily get an IIT Bombay CSE seat. But because you chose NIT aerospace engineering as your first choice, this is what will be allotted first.

After registration, students will find a choice-filling form where all the available college options with branches will be displayed. Candidates will have to select the college and branch priority-wise. Let us discuss a choice-filling strategy about what to research and important factors to consider while prioritising the choices:

  • Go to the official website of JoSAA and find the category and rank data for past rounds. You can take the cutoff for 2025 and 2024. Check what your expected colleges list can be based on your JEE Main 2026 rank and JEE Advanced 2026 rank.
  • Many students are confused whether they need to prioritise the college branch, specialisation or city. Matrix JEE experts advise to always prioritise the metro cities and the college branch. For example, opt for IIT Madras over IIT Kharagpur, as metro cities have better opportunities and scope. This research forms the basis of an informed preference list.
  • When you refer to JoSAA’s previous year cutoffs, make sure to also check the home state quota and other state cutoffs, as NITs reserve 50% of seats for the home quota.

Decide Your Core Priority

The next step is to decide which to keep as a core priority – branch, city or institute. This is something to decide on before making the choice list. Then, based on that, they can prioritise the colleges.

  • Branch-first approach: Candidates who have a specific field of interest should keep the branch as the priority. So, in every institute, choose the branch that you prefer as first.
  • Institute-first approach: Suitable for candidates who prioritise admission to a particular institute, regardless of the branch. These candidates should rank their preferred institutes at the top and accept whatever programme falls within their rank range.

How to Arrange Your JoSAA Preference List Strategically?

Matrix JEE experts have provided some tips on how to arrange the college preference list. Here is how to structure your list across three tiers:

  • Reach choices: Choose programmes where the previous year’s closing rank was slightly above your current rank, typically within a margin of 5 to 20 ranks.
  • Realistic choices: Programmes where your rank falls comfortably within the previous year’s opening and closing rank range.
  • Safe choices: Programmes with historically high closing ranks where allotment is likely regardless of minor rank fluctuations.

The preference list must reflect your genuine priorities, arranged from most preferred to least preferred. Candidates sometimes place safer options higher on the list to improve the likelihood. Note that if your most preferred programme is placed low, the system may allot a less preferred seat before reaching it.

Selecting a Minimum of 40-50 Choices

In JoSAA counselling 2026, 127 premier institutes will be participating, and the number of seats offered is approximately 62,000.

  • 23 IITs are participating in JoSAA counselling 2026 and are offering approximately 18,160 seats.
  • 31 NITs & IIEST Shibpur are also participating and are offering approximately 24,525 seats.
  • There will be 26 IIITs participating, offering 9,940 seats.
  • Out of the 127 total premier institutes participating, 47 GFTIs will be a part of JoSAA counselling and will offer approximately 10,228 seats.

Students are allowed to choose as many institutes and academic programmes or branch specialisations on the JoSAA choice-filling form. There is no maximum limit on the number of college choices a student can fill. Matrix JEE experts recommend filling at least 40-50 choices in the college-filling form to be on the safe side. This way, you can increase your chances of getting a college seat and avoid repeating a year. Most students make the mistake of filling only the top 10-15 choices, hoping to get a seat in one of them.

Use Mock Allotments to Refine Your List

For students to understand the JoSAA counselling process, JoSAA conducts two mock allotments before the official rounds. The JoSAA mock rounds are just a planning tool for candidates to make better choices. This is just for practice so that students can get a fair idea of what colleges and branches they might get.

  • In case none of your top 10–15 choices appears in the mock allotment result, your list may be too ambitious.
  • Try to revise the list with realistic options you are getting in the mock rounds and more realistic and safe options in the lower half.
  • Try to use your first list for mock 1. Revise the list and use that for mock 2 to understand the colleges and branches based on the new list. Based on both mock results, adjust accordingly.

Lock Your Choices Before the Deadline

Students should be aware of the deadline and make sure to make their final preferred list before the deadline. Locking your choices is the next step.

  • To lock your final choices, an OTP verification process will be conducted on your registered mobile number.
  • Candidates should note that if they do not lock manually, the last saved version of the list is automatically locked at the deadline.
  • Also, new choices cannot be added after this.
  • The same preference list will be applied across all six rounds of allotment.

Check Seat Allotment Results

After each round, candidates must log into their JoSAA account to view the allotment result. And then decide if they want to lock in the choice or participate in further rounds. Here are some things to keep in mind from Matrix JEE experts:

  • If a seat has been allotted, make sure to download the Provisional Allotment Letter immediately.
  • A response must be submitted within the window provided, which is typically 24 to 48 hours.

Failure to respond within this window results in automatic cancellation of the allotted seat and disqualification from all subsequent rounds.

Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF)

The last step after filling your choices and JoSAA counselling procedure is to pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF). This fee will be required to be paid before the document upload. Many candidates are not aware that this fee payment must be made during the small window where they need to decide whether they want to accept the seat or not.

CategorySeat Acceptance Fee
General / OBC-NCL / EWS₹35,000
SC / ST / PwD₹15,000

Candidates who withdraw before the last round of JoSAA receive a refund of ₹32,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or ₹12,000 (SC/ST/PwD) after deduction of a ₹3,000 processing fee.

Select Freeze, Float, or Slide

After paying the SAF (Seat Acceptance Fee), candidates must decide and choose how they wish to proceed with the seat allotted in each round. Candidates can choose the freeze, float or slide option. Let us understand what each of these options means:

Freeze – The candidate accepts the allotted seat and does not wish to participate in further upgradation. The seat is confirmed. Matrix JEE experts advise choosing the freeze option only if the allotted programme and specialisation are in your top preference and you feel satisfied.

Float – The candidate accepts the allotted seat but decides to participate further for a higher-preference programme and a different institute.

Slide – The candidate accepts the allotted institute but wishes to upgrade to a better branch within the same institute only.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some common mistakes that students tend to make easily during JoSAA counselling choice filling. Matrix JEE experts have made a list of the common mistakes below to make students aware of and avoid them:

  • Filling too few choices – A short preference list limits the algorithm’s ability to find the best available match. Matrix JEE experts recommend filling at least 40-50 choices in the college-filling form to be on the safe side.
  • Incorrect arrangement of preferences – Placing safe options high and aspirational options low undermines the purpose of choice filling. The list must reflect genuine priority order.
  • Confusing Float with Slide – These two options are distinct in outcome. A float may move a candidate to a different institute. The slide restricts movement to within the same institute. Selecting the wrong option can result in an unintended transfer.
  • Submitting an expired category certificate – OBC-NCL and EWS certificates dated before April 1, 2026, are not accepted. This error leads to reclassification and loss of the reserved seat.
  • Missing the Seat Acceptance Fee deadline – The SAF must be paid within the post-allotment window. Missing this payment cancels the seat with no recourse.
  • Not attending physical reporting – Completing the online process in full does not substitute for in-person document verification at the allotted institute. Candidates who miss physical reporting lose their confirmed seat.

Conclusion

JoSAA counselling is the final step towards admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other top premier institutes. The allotment algorithm is preference-order-based. The JoSAA counselling will happen in 5 rounds. The choice-filling process is the most critical factor in determining which college and branch a candidate receives. Candidates who have researched cutoffs carefully, structured their preference list in true priority order, kept documents ready in advance, understood each acceptance option, and met every deadline without exception will get the best outcome. Candidates who approach the process with this level of preparation will be in the strongest position to secure a seat that reflects their rank and their aspirations.

FAQs

Can a candidate participate in JoSAA counselling with only a JEE Main rank?

Yes. Candidates who have qualified JEE Main 2026 are eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling and may fill choices for programmes offered at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Programmes at IITs are accessible only to candidates with a valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank.

Is there a limit on the number of choices a candidate can fill?

No. JoSAA does not impose a maximum limit on the number of choices. Candidates are advised to fill in as many choices as possible, ideally between 40 and 50, covering a range of institutes and programmes across reach, realistic, and safe categories.

Can choices be changed or reordered after they are locked?

No. Once the choice-filling window closes and choices are locked, no additions, deletions, or reordering are permitted. The same locked preference list applies to all subsequent rounds of seat allotment.

Is a candidate allotted more than one seat in a single round?

No. In each round, a candidate is allotted only one seat and the highest-ranked option on their preference list for which they are eligible based on rank, category, and seat availability.

What happens if a candidate does not pay the Seat Acceptance Fee within the deadline?

The allotted seat is automatically cancelled. The candidate is also excluded from all subsequent rounds of JoSAA allotment. No extension or exception is granted for missed SAF deadlines.

Is the Seat Acceptance Fee refundable?

The SAF is adjusted against the institute’s admission fee at the time of joining and is not separately refundable. However, candidates who withdraw before the final round of JoSAA receive a partial refund after a processing fee deduction of ₹3,000.

What is the difference between the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) and the Partial Admission Fee (PAF)?

The SAF is paid on the JoSAA portal to confirm willingness to accept an allotted seat. The PAF is an additional fee paid directly to NIT+ system institutes to confirm admission. Both are required; non-payment of either results in cancellation of the allotted seat.

Can a candidate participate in CSAB Special Rounds after JoSAA concludes?

Yes, provided their JoSAA seat has not been cancelled and they register separately on csab.nic.in. Candidates who wish to retain their JoSAA-allotted seat from the NIT+ system while participating in CSAB Special Rounds must also pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) by the specified deadline.
