JEE Main 2026 Counselling: JoSAA Process, Key Dates, Choice Filling, and College List
Students can now apply for JEE Main 2026 counselling through the three primary centralised counselling bodies, JoSAA, CSAB and JAC. With a valid JEE Main 2026 score, students can register and apply to get admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. To get into IITs, students who qualified for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam can sit for JoSAA counselling 2026. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the single mechanism through which every government engineering seat gets allocated in India. A student with a rank of 5,000 who understands JoSAA can end up at a better college and branch than a student with a rank of 3,000 who rushes through choice-filling without research.
This guide covers everything you need to know about and navigate JEE Main 2026 counselling. We will discuss in detail what the JoSAA eligibility rules are, key dates, choice-filling strategy and alternative counselling options.
JEE Main 2026 Counselling
The JEE Main 2026 counselling involves many options and counselling bodies that students can apply for to secure their admission seat and increase their chances of getting into a college. Here are the counselling bodies that students can apply to, and the list also includes options that many students are not aware of, and they accept JEE Main scores:
JoSAA Counselling
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the centralised counselling process for candidates qualifying through both JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Through JoSAA, seats are allotted across more than 110 premier engineering institutes, including various IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
CSAB NEUT
CSAB NEUT counselling is conducted for reserved seats available in the northeastern states and selected union territories. This process is managed by the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) for eligible candidates under the NEUT scheme.
CSAB SFTI
The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) separately conducts counselling for Self-Financing Technical Institutes (SFTIs). Seat allotment is done based on candidates’ preferences and their JEE Main All India Rank (AIR) in Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Apart from the popular JoSAA and CSAB counselling, the list below is of counselling authorities that students can also apply for:
- JAC Delhi – Counselling for institutes like DTU, NSUT, IGDTUW, and IIIT Delhi.
- JAC Chandigarh – Admission process for UIET Chandigarh, CCET, and related institutes.
- WBJEE Counselling – Accepts JEE Main scores in several private and government colleges in West Bengal.
- UPTAC Counselling – Uttar Pradesh counselling process for AKTU-affiliated colleges and other institutes.
- MP DTE Counselling – Madhya Pradesh engineering admissions through JEE Main scores.
- HSTES Counselling – Haryana state counselling for B.Tech admissions.
- REAP Rajasthan – Rajasthan Engineering Admission Process for participating colleges.
- GUJCET/ACPC Counselling – Gujarat admissions through ACPC using JEE Main ranks.
- KCET Counselling – Karnataka counselling, where some institutes also consider JEE Main scores.
- OJEE Counselling – Odisha counselling process for engineering admissions.
- MHT CET CAP Counselling – Maharashtra CAP rounds where JEE Main scores are accepted by certain institutions.
- IPU CET / GGSIPU Counselling – Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University admissions through JEE Main ranks.
- BITSAT Counselling – Separate counselling for admission into BITS campuses.
- VITEEE Counselling – VIT University admission process. The VITEEE counselling happens separately and was conducted between April and May 2026.
- SRMJEEE Counselling – SRM Institute admission counselling.
BITSAT, VITEEE, and SRMJEEE have their own entrance exams and conduct separate counselling as well. They are not a part of the JoSAA counselling or the CSAB counselling centralised system.
Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main 2026 Counselling
Before registering with any of these counselling bodies, students first need to make sure they meet the eligibility criteria of the JoSAA counselling 2026 session. Especially the Class 12 score threshold, which many students overlook. Now that you know the different counselling bodies you can register with using the JEE Main 2026 score, the next important step is to know the eligibility criteria. Many students lose their seats or face disqualification at document verification because they skipped the complete eligibility conditions.
- The candidate must have appeared in JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1 for B.Tech, Paper 2 for B.Arch/B.Planning).
- Must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as core subjects.
- Must have scored at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST candidates). This is the NIT eligibility threshold set by the Ministry of Education.
- Candidates appearing in Class 12 for the first time in 2026 are also eligible, provided they meet the score criteria after results are declared.
- For IIT seats (via JEE Advanced), candidates must have a valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank and must be in the top 2,50,000 qualifiers of JEE Main 2026.
- Age limit: Candidates born on or after October 1, 2001, are eligible (SC/ST/PwD: October 1, 1996).
- State Quota Seat Eligibility: For 15% home state quota seats at NITs, candidates must be domiciled residents of the respective state where the NIT is located. Different counselling bodies (like JAC Delhi, UPTAC, REAP) have their own domicile conditions, which candidates must verify separately.
Important Note: Candidates must satisfy the Class 12 eligibility criteria prescribed by JoSAA and the respective admitting institutes for 2026. Students should verify the latest eligibility conditions from the official JoSAA Business Rules before counselling registration.

JoSAA Counselling 2026
JoSAA, or the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, is the single centralised body responsible for seat allotment across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. All candidates who qualify for JEE Main 2026 must go through JoSAA. Matrix JEE experts advise attending the 2 mock rounds of JoSAA counselling, as they are simulations of the real process and are designed to help candidates understand which seat they are likely to receive based on their current choices and rank.
Important Note for IIT Admissions
Many students assume that qualifying JEE Main is sufficient for IIT admission. IIT seats available through JoSAA can only be allotted to candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced 2026 and hold a valid JEE Advanced rank. Students with only a JEE Main rank can compete for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA.

Step-by-Step JoSAA Counselling Process
Here is the JoSAA counselling process sequence of steps and what to expect during the JoSAA counselling.
- Registration – Visit the official JoSAA portal and log in using your JEE Main 2026 roll number. Fill out the registration form with accurate personal details.
- Online Choice Filling and Locking – After successful registration, candidates fill in their preferred colleges in priority order. Once submitted, you will not be able to change your choices.
- Mock Seat Allocation (Rounds 1 and 2) – JoSAA runs two mock allocation rounds before real allotment begins.
- Seat Allotment – Seat allotment happens based on your JEE Main 2026 rank in 6 rounds. Students can either choose the float, freeze, slide or withdraw option in each round.
- Fee Payment and Seat Acceptance – Pay the fee after the seat is allotted using a credit/debit card or net banking. The fees are as follows:
| Category | Fee (in ₹) |
| General (GEN) | 45,000 |
| SC / SC-PwD / ST / ST-PwD / OBC-NCL / OBC-NCL-PwD / Gen-PwD | 20,000 |
(Based on JoSAA 2025 fee structure. Students can verify at josaa.nic.in for confirmed 2026 figures.
- Reporting to the Allotted Institute
The final step of the JoSAA process is physically reporting to your allotted institute within the deadline and going through the document verification process, which will confirm your admission.
Understanding Freeze, Float, Slide and Withdraw in JoSAA
Before stepping into JoSAA counselling, it is necessary to understand the most important freeze, float, slide and withdraw options. As these will decide which college you will end up getting through JoSAA:
- Freeze – Accept the allotted seat and exit further counselling rounds.
- Float – Accept the current seat but remain eligible for better institute-branch options in future rounds.
- Slide – Accept the current institute but remain eligible for a better branch within the same institute.
- Withdraw – Exit the counselling process completely and receive the applicable refund according to JoSAA rules.
Matrix JEE experts suggest students follow the quick guide below to understand when to use the above options.
- Choose the freeze option if you are fully satisfied with the seat allotted.
- Choose a float if you do not want to lose the current seat allotted and also explore higher preferences.
- A slide option can be used if you want another branch in the same institute.
- Withdraw if you have decided on another counselling process or institution.
JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling Strategy by Matrix JEE Experts
Strategising the choice-filling options helps in getting the best out of the counselling process to end up with the best college through JoSAA counselling. Here are some tips to consider from Matrix JEE experts while filling out the choice form:
- Prioritise Branch Over College – Make a career-based choice by keeping the branch over the college. For example, for most placement-focused students, computer science at NIT Warangal is generally preferred over mechanical engineering at NIT Trichy, but this is subjective and depends on your career goals.
- Utlise All 25,000 Choices – Students make a common mistake of choosing only 15-20 choices and filling in as few choices as possible. Fill as many realistic institute-branch combinations as possible. There is no disadvantage in adding more preferences as long as they are arranged in genuine order of interest.
- Use Previous Year’s Opening and Closing Ranks – JoSAA publishes opening and closing ranks for every round of every previous year. Before finalising choices, cross-check your rank against last year’s closing ranks. If your rank is within 15–20% of the closing rank, there is a high possibility of getting it.
- Consider Home State Quota – Most NITs allocate approximately 50% of seats under the Home State quota and 50% under the Other State quota, subject to institute-specific seat matrices.
- Keep CSAB as a Backup Plan – Many students receive excellent branches during CSAB Special Rounds due to vacant seats after JoSAA. Always keep the CSAB schedule in mind.
CSAB Counselling 2026
If all six JoSAA rounds pass without a seat or a satisfactory outcome, CSAB offers an important second chance. After all six JoSAA rounds are completed, vacant seats in the NIT+ system are filled through CSAB Special Rounds. This is a separate process managed by the Central Seat Allocation Board and is an important safety net for candidates who did not receive a seat or are looking for a better option.
Who Can Apply for CSAB Counselling 2026?
- Candidates who qualified JEE Main 2026 but did not participate in JoSAA counselling.
- Candidates who participated in JoSAA but were not allotted a seat in any of the six rounds.
- Candidates who were allotted a JoSAA seat and paid the acceptance fee, they can apply for CSAB to potentially upgrade.
- Candidates who selected the “Not to Participate in Special Round” option during JoSAA reporting are not eligible for CSAB.
CSAB Counselling 2026 Registration Process
Visit the official CSAB website, where students will have to register using their JEE Main 2026 roll number. Fill in personal details, upload all required documents as per instructions and pay the CSAB application fee. The CSAB counselling opens for a short period of time after JoSAA counselling concludes.

What If You Do Not Get a Seat Through JoSAA or CSAB?
Many students do not end up getting their desired college or a seat after the JoSAA and CSAB counselling process. Matrix JEE experts advise such students not to feel disheartened, as there are still many options available, and you do not have to lose a year to get admission into a good engineering college. Consider the tips below:
- Participate in state counselling processes such as REAP, JAC Delhi, UPTAC, HSTES, or OJEE.
- Apply through institute-level counselling in private universities.
- Consider BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE, and other private university admission processes.
- Explore government engineering colleges that accept state entrance exams.
- Take a drop year if aiming for a significantly higher rank next year.
Avoid These Common Mistakes Students Make During JEE Main 2026 Counselling
Thousands of students choose the wrong college or the wrong branch, or miss out on any such opportunity. This is mainly because of some common mistakes made during the JoSAA counselling process. Matrix JEE experts advise candidates to stay alert and avoid the following common errors:
- Filling Too Few Choices in the form: Many students only fill a limited number of college choices and college-branch combinations, assuming they will get one of their preferred options. Since there is no disadvantage to adding more choices, students should fill in as many realistic options as possible to maximise their chances of seat allotment.
- Arranging Choices Based on Cutoffs Instead of Preference: The order of choices is more important than the cutoff itself. First, make a list of all the choices you prefer and then check the cutoffs for each of them and rearrange accordingly.
- Missing Seat Acceptance or Reporting Deadlines: JoSAA follows strict deadlines for fee payment, document verification, and response to queries. Missing even a single deadline can lead to cancellation of the allotted seat and removal from further counselling rounds.
- Ignoring Home State Quota Opportunities: Many students focus only on all-India category cutoffs and overlook home state quota seats. In several NITs, candidates may secure significantly better branches through their home state quota.
- Skipping CSAB Special Rounds: Students often assume that counselling ends after JoSAA. However, CSAB Special Rounds fill vacant seats across the NIT+ system and have helped many candidates secure better branches or institutes after JoSAA concludes.
- Uploading Incorrect or Expired Certificates: Category certificates, EWS certificates, domicile certificates, and OBC-NCL certificates must be in the prescribed format and validity period. Incorrect documents can lead to cancellation of category benefits or even seat rejection during verification.
- Freezing Too Early: Some students immediately choose the Freeze option after receiving a seat, even when higher preferences remain achievable in later rounds. Candidates should carefully evaluate whether Float or Slide would be more beneficial before making a final decision.
Conclusion
JEE Main 2026 counselling is a strategic process that can define the next four years of your academic and professional life. Students who invest time in understanding how JoSAA works, researching previous year cutoffs, filling choices thoughtfully, and keeping alternative counselling options open consistently end up with better outcomes than those who treat it as a last-minute task. Whether you are aiming for the top NITs through JoSAA, exploring state quota options via REAP or JAC, or considering private institutions through BITSAT and VITEEE, every choice you make during counselling is a lever you control. Use it wisely. Stay updated with official notifications on josaa.nic.in, maintain your documents well in advance, and do not hesitate to seek guidance. The seat you secure today is the foundation of the career you will build tomorrow.
FAQs
Yes, you absolutely can, and honestly, you should. No rule stops you from registering with JoSAA and a state counselling body simultaneously. Just make sure you keep track of the deadlines for both because if you accept a JoSAA seat and pay the fee, withdrawing later to join a state counselling process could mean losing part of that money. The smartest move is to keep all options open and only make a final call once every allotment result is out.
These three options decide what happens to your seat after each allotment round. Freeze means you are happy with what you got and you want to lock it in and exit the process permanently. Float means you are okay with the current seat but you want to stay in the running in case something better from your choice list opens up in the next round. Slide works the same way as Float but limits your upgrade to a different branch within the same college rather than a completely different institute.
Candidates must satisfy the Class 12 eligibility criteria prescribed for the 2026 admission cycle by JoSAA and the respective admitting institutes. Eligibility requirements can vary depending on the institute category and may be updated from year to year. Students should carefully review the official JoSAA 2026 Business Rules and admission brochure before counselling registration to confirm the latest eligibility conditions. Meeting the JEE Main or JEE Advanced cutoff alone does not guarantee admission if the prescribed academic eligibility requirements are not fulfilled.
Fill as many choices as you possibly can because JoSAA lets you add up to 25,000 institute branch combinations and there is absolutely no downside to filling more. The order matters more than most students realise because the algorithm picks the highest-ranked choice on your list that your rank qualifies for. If you put your safe options at the top you will get those even if a better seat was within your reach. Always put your dream college and branch first and build downward from there.
Missing the fee payment deadline means your seat gets cancelled immediately and goes to the next person in line. You also lose the right to be considered in future JoSAA rounds, which is a costly mistake, especially if you had decent options coming up. Paying the fee but skipping document verification is equally risky because your provisional admission gets cancelled and the fee is usually not returned. JoSAA deadlines are not forgiving, so treat every single one like it is the last day of an exam.
You can withdraw during the designated withdrawal windows that open after each round but do not expect a full refund. JoSAA keeps a portion of the acceptance fee as a processing charge regardless of when you exit. The earlier you withdraw the more of your money you are likely to recover so withdrawing before Round 3 is generally better than waiting until the final rounds. Always check the official JoSAA 2026 brochure for the exact refund breakup because the numbers change slightly every year.
This question comes up every single year and the answer genuinely depends on what you want to do after graduation. If you are chasing a software or product company placement, then branch matters a lot more than institute rank because tech companies recruit from almost every NIT. But if your plan involves GATE, PSU jobs, or a master’s degree abroad then the institute name and its research infrastructure carry more weight. Think about where you want to be five years from now before you lock that choice list.
