On 23rd August 2023, the latest CBSE board exam update was published in which the Union Ministry of Education announced that there will be two board exams in a year from the academic year 2024. MoE (Ministry of Education) has made these changes to align the students\u2019 learning with the new education policy (NEP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Further, it was mentioned that the better score will be retained out of these CBSE two board exams.<\/span><\/p>

The Benefits of CBSE Board Exam Twice a Year: NEP 2024<\/b><\/h2>

The decision to conduct the CBSE board exam twice a year will completely transform education and curtail student pressure. Because of two board exam attempts, students will be able to give their best performance and their better score out of the two attempts will be considered. Thus, students can study with a relaxed mind without the anxiety of board exams.<\/span><\/p>

Moreover, the exam pattern will introduce a slight change as the questions will be based on concepts instead of rote memorization. Thus, students’ logical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills will improve, and all these will help them in the long run irrespective of what domain they choose for their career.<\/span><\/p>

Ministry\u2019s Announcement<\/b><\/h3>

\u201cUnder the new framework of education policy, the school boards will develop the facility to offer \u2018on-demand\u2019 exams within the curriculum duration. The cost of textbooks will be optimized and the main focus will be on avoiding the outdated practice of covering the whole textbook in the classroom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Thus, the new pattern of two board exams in a year will be fully oriented on conceptual and in-depth learning instead of rote memorization.<\/span><\/p>

The Ministry of Education has given a green signal for implementing all these changes. The official notifications regarding the same from national and various state boards are yet to come.<\/span><\/p>

CBSE Board Exam Changes: What\u2019s New?<\/b><\/h2>

Focused Learning of Languages<\/b><\/h3>

According to the trend of the recent 10 years, there was a sharp drop in students\u2019 interest in learning languages including Hindi and their own regional languages. To retain linguistic diversity and introduce students to the significance of native languages, the Ministry of Education is going to make it compulsory to study two languages in 11th and 12th classes. Out of these two languages, one must be compulsorily an Indian language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Flexible Subject Choice and On-demand Examination<\/b><\/h3>

One of the major CBSE board exam changes is the flexibility of the selection of subjects in the 11th and 12th classes. Now, the students will be able to choose subjects as per their interest irrespective of streams like- Arts, Science, and Commerce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Thus, pursuing study with favorite subjects will multiply the productivity of students, and they will enjoy the study instead of feeling it like a burden.<\/span><\/p>

Moreover, the government is planning to set up a framework for conducting on-demand examinations. Thus, this on-demand exam framework will make sure that the learning experience is more personalized and adaptive.<\/span><\/p>

Changes in Education Policy at a Glance<\/b><\/h2>
  1. No emphasis on Foundational literacy and Numeracy.<\/span><\/li>
  2. There will be two board exams in a year.<\/span><\/li>
  3. The 10+2 model will be replaced with the 5+3+3+4 <\/span>model<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>
  4. There will be no streamwise distinction among the subjects belonging to Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Academic, and Vocational subjects.<\/span><\/li>
  5. The proposed framework of on-demand exams.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>

    More Weightage to Competency-based Questions<\/b><\/p>

    From 2024, CBSE will ask more Competency-based questions to test how students can apply the concepts to real-life problems.<\/span><\/p>

    What Are Competency-Based Questions?<\/b><\/h3>

    These are not direct questions like – the definition of something, or a derivation of a standard formula. Rather, these questions are based on real-life applications and asked in the form of assertion-reason, objective type with a bit of twist in generic problems.<\/span><\/p>

    The main motive of such questions is to remove the bad practice of rote memorization and test students’ thinking and analytical ability.<\/span><\/p>

    New Exam Format for 10th and 12th Class CBSE<\/b><\/h2>

    It’s not going to be the first time when CBSE is introducing competency-based questions in board exams, but from 2024, the weightage of such questions is going to be higher than before. Here is the new exam format for CBSE 10th and 12th board exams:<\/span><\/p>

    Ques. Will there be two board exams in a year in 2023?<\/b><\/p>

    Ans: No, two board exams framework will apply from 2023-24 academic year. So, in 2024, there will be board exams twice.<\/span><\/p>

    Ques. Will RBSE also conduct two board exams in a year?<\/b><\/p>

    Ans: There is no official notice yet related to biannual board exams from state boards including RBSE.<\/span><\/p>

    Ques. What is the 5+3+3+4 model according to NEP?<\/b><\/p>

    Ans: It represents the duration of each stage of school-based education. The first 5 years will be for strengthening the foundation, next 3 years for the preparatory stage, the next 3 years for the middle stage, and the rest of 4 years will be for the secondary stage.<\/span><\/p>
