But every year, students with good ranks lose their seat during counselling because of an OBC certificate in the wrong format, a scan that isn’t legible, or a marksheet left at home. This NEET counselling 2026 documents checklist covers the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). It lists the documents you’ll need at both stages: the scanned copies you upload during online registration, and the originals you carry to the college for reporting.

Whether you’re a student handling this yourself or a parent checking that nothing is missed, keep this open while you put your documents together. The list is short, but one missing or wrongly formatted document can cost you the seat.

One more point before you start. For 2026, MCC has changed how reporting works. Candidates now choose between Freeze (accept the allotted seat) and Float (stay in for a better seat in later rounds). Freeze candidates report to the college once for original document verification and fee payment; Float candidates skip the in-person visit and their admission stays valid in the system. MCC has also moved seat resignation and NRI document submission online. This changes which documents you submit online and which you carry in person, so read the next section carefully even if you’ve been through counselling before.

What’s New in NEET Counselling 2026: Freeze, Float, and Online Verification

For years, the rule was straightforward: once you got a seat, you had to report to that college in person, whatever the circumstances. That has now changed. The MCC’s official notice sets out the process. It splits candidates into two groups, based on whether they want to upgrade their seat in a later round:

“Freeze” Option (Accepting the Seat): If you are satisfied with your allotted seat and choose to freeze it, you must report to the allotted college in person. You will need to carry all original documents for verification and complete your fee payment.

“Float” Option (Upgrading the Seat): If you wish to participate in the next round for a better seat, you do not need to visit the college in person. Your current admission will remain valid in the online system.

One point applies to everyone: uploading documents online is mandatory for both groups within the reporting window. Float candidates verify online and wait; Freeze candidates upload and also carry their originals to the college. So the set of online scans matters for every candidate this year, not just as a registration formality.

Keep this split in mind as you read the two lists below. It decides whether you report at the college or from home.

First, Understand the Two Stages

Most document problems begin with one wrong assumption: that counselling is a single event. It is not. There are two separate stages, and they work differently. The first is online registration and choice filling on the MCC portal at mcc.nic.in, done from home. The second is document verification and reporting, which is now either an online upload (Float) or an in-person visit with originals (Freeze). A scan that passed the upload stage still counts for nothing at Freeze reporting if you cannot produce the original. Keep both stages in view from the start, and most of the last-minute trouble is avoided.

Stage One: Documents for Online Registration

At registration, the portal asks for a few scanned files and your details. Keep these ready before your registration window opens.

• NEET UG 2026 admit card

• NEET UG 2026 scorecard / result

• Class 10 marksheet and certificate – for date of birth

• Class 12 marksheet and certificate – for eligibility and marks

• Government photo ID – Aadhaar, PAN or Passport

• Recent passport-size photograph – white background, face clearly visible

• Scanned signature – on white paper, black or blue ink

The portal pre-fills your NEET roll number, rank and score from NTA data this year. At registration, you pay the registration fee and a refundable security deposit. That’s the core upload set. The marksheets rarely cause problems. The photo and signature do, usually because they’re scanned in a hurry on the last day in poor light. Scan them once, scan them properly, and they’re done.

Stage Two: Documents for Verification and Reporting

This is the longer list, and it decides whether you keep your seat. Once your name appears in the allotment result, Float candidates upload these for online verification, while Freeze candidates carry the originals plus photocopies to the college. Either way, keep every document ready in clean, scannable condition.

• MCC seat allotment letter, printed from your login

• NEET UG 2026 admit card

• NEET UG 2026 scorecard / result

• Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate

• Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate

• Photo ID proof – Aadhaar / PAN / Passport

• Eight to ten passport-size photographs, the same one from your NEET application

• Category certificate – SC / ST / OBC – NCL / EWS, where applicable

• PwD certificate – For candidates under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities quota, issued by a designated centre

• Provisional allotment fee / admission fee receipt

If you’re a Freeze candidate, carry the originals in one folder and don’t hand them over loose. The college keeps your photocopies. They check your originals and hand them back. If you’re Float, scan quality matters most, since the verifying officer is reviewing your uploads on a screen and can’t ask you to adjust the paper.

Category Certificate: Where Many Candidates Lose their Seat

If you are applying under a reserved category, read this section carefully. Wrong or invalid certificates reject more AIQ candidates at document verification than almost anything else, and the rules are stricter than most people expect.

One point catches many candidates out: a certificate your state counselling accepted can still get rejected at All India Quota. For OBC candidates in particular, your caste must appear on the Central Government OBC-NCL list, and the certificate must be in the prescribed Central format. AIQ does not accept a state-format certificate. It must also state ‘Non-Creamy Layer’ clearly, and it must be valid for the current financial year – for 2026 admission, issued on or after 1 April 2026. MCC will not accept an older certificate.

Also check who signed it. A valid OBC-NCL or income-and-asset certificate must be issued by a competent authority – a Tehsildar, SDM or District Magistrate. EWS candidates need their income and asset certificate in the standard Central Government format, and it too must be for the current financial year. Verification rejects expired certificates.

If you have any doubt about the format or the dates, get a fresh certificate made now. Discovering the problem on reporting day can cost you the seat, and it is easily avoided.

A Special Note for NRI and OCI Candidates

If you’re applying for an NRI quota seat, your timeline is tighter than other candidates’, so handle this part first. As per MCC guidelines, NRI and OCI candidates applying for NRI quota seats must get their documents verified by MCC’s NRI verification team before choice filling, not after allotment. During registration, you select “Yes” for the NRI quota question, then submit the supporting documents listed in that year’s official notice online to MCC’s designated verification cell. Once this verification is cleared, you can fill choices for both NRI and unreserved seats.

In short: if this applies to you, do the NRI paperwork before anything else on this list. If you miss that window, the rest of your file won’t be considered.

Get the Scan and Format Right

The upload stage rejects a lot of applications, and usually for the same avoidable reasons. Most upload errors come from low-quality scans or the wrong file format, not a missing document. Where verification is done online, a bad scan can cost you directly, not just cause a delay.

Before you upload anything, open the portal’s instructions for that year and follow them exactly. As a rough guide: files usually go in as JPEG or PDF, sizes tend to run from around 10 KB to 200 KB per document, and photographs are often kept under 50 KB. Use a flatbed scanner or a good mobile scanning app, not a quick phone photo in poor light. Every line should stay readable when you zoom in. A simple test: if you can’t read it easily on your own screen, the verifying officer won’t be able to either.

Reporting-Day Tips for Students and Parents

Having the folder ready is only half the job. What you do with it on reporting day matters just as much.

Carry three to five self-attested photocopy sets alongside your originals – several counters may each want their own copy.

Self-attest every photocopy before you leave home – write “Self-Attested” and sign each one, not while you’re standing in the queue.

Never rely on photocopies alone. If an original is missing, the admission can be cancelled on the spot, with no second chance that round.

Back everything up digitally – keep soft copies on your phone, in cloud storage, and on a pen drive, so a lost folder never turns into a lost seat.

Reach early because verification queues move slowly, and reporting windows don’t get extended.

Parents, this is where you can help most. Check that the folder is complete and the backup copies exist before anyone leaves the house. If the process is being done online, sit with your child through the upload. A second person often spots a blurry scan before the portal rejects it.

Conclusion

Requirements and dates change each year slightly. The final document list and exact schedule are given in the official MCC Information Bulletin and notices at mcc.nic.in. Check both before you register. MCC also provides step-by-step video tutorials in Hindi and English on registration, choice filling, document requirements and seat allotment. Watch them once before you start. Use this checklist to prepare, but treat the official bulletin as final.

Prepare your documents early. Arrange your category certificate well in advance. Scan all documents clearly, and carry the originals to reporting for verification. Once these are in order, your seat depends on your rank. If you are unsure about a certificate format or a Freeze or Float decision, the counselling team at Matrix NEET Division can help students and parents decide before the deadline.

References

Medical Counselling Committee – official portal and Information Bulletin, mcc.nic.in.

MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026 official notice, 3 August 2026

MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026 NRI/OCI verification advisory, 6 August 2026

MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026 official video tutorials (Hindi & English)

FAQs

Do I still have to report to the college in person in 2026?
Only if you are a Freeze candidate, meaning you accept the allotted seat and do not want an upgrade.
